Why is Raccoon Dangerous?

The 911 emergency service receives over 600,000 phone calls annually about strange animals that have sneaked into a house or apartment. These uninvited guests are called raccoons. They have lived in North America for thousands of years and are considered to be the “native inhabitants” of the wild. But raccoons still cannot get along with humans.

The raccoon is a unique animal and, perhaps, the most mysterious of all. The Indians considered them to be living people who changed their guises to fulfill a special mission. In almost all tribes, these animals were revered, but they tried never to contact them.
The greatest danger, according to Indian beliefs, was the raccoon’s intent and deep gaze, which could “suck the soul out of a person.”

For humans, a raccoon is dangerous for three reasons

First, he is the biggest opportunist in America’s wilderness.
It is very difficult to scare him, make him do something, drive him out and tame him. He is fearless and unprincipled.
A raccoon can easily climb into your house through a small gap and crawl under the covers in the middle of the night.
Steal some of your groceries when you unload the trunk after shopping.
Bite your leg while walking the back yard. At the same time, the raccoon is always driven not by anger and lust for blood, but by some hooligan curiosity.

Secondly, raccoons are incredibly smart and vindictive.
In Michigan, there was a case where a wild raccoon bitten by a domestic dog ultimately lured its abuser into a trap set by hunters.
It is curious that at first the injured dog was in the booth on a leash. The raccoon first chewed the leash and then lured the dog out of the yard.

In Florida, a raccoon attacked by its owner threw fish from a small pond in the courtyard onto land. He didn’t even eat them. It was a cold-blooded revenge on the “unfriendly” homeowner.

It has been proven that the raccoon remembers in great detail the events that happened to him over the past three years.

Third, a raccoon with rabies can cause tremendous damage to your property.
Due to its physical strength, it breaks and spoils everything that comes to hand – from the plastic chairs in your backyard to the rubber tires on the car.

Quite often, mad animals die between the walls and partitions of houses. Residents spend a lot of time and money to first locate the 20-pound animal corpse and then remove it.

In Florida, there was a case when a raccoon entered a mansion, literally unscrewing the grill of the central air conditioning system. Then he cut through the wires and started a fire. The $ 1.5 million house burned down completely.
It is not uncommon for a fire to occur when wild animals turn on the gas on the stove burners.

“The instincts and habits of raccoons still require careful study,” says wildlife expert Barney None, who has been an exterminator all his life. – This animal is unpredictable. It can independently climb into the cage you have prepared for it, and even lock the door from the inside, or it can throw itself in your face from a tree branch. ”

Unfortunately, there is no single surefire way to get rid of raccoons. It is necessary to fight the beast comprehensively.

First advice: completely remove food waste, berries and paper from your territory.
These are the favorite “delicacies” of any raccoon. For example, a bundle of cardboard in a back yard can attract the beast from miles away. He will not only eat it with pleasure, but also sharpen his sharp teeth and claws.

Tip two: close your trash cans tightly.
A standard plastic cover is not enough. An adult raccoon will open it in the blink of an eye with a tenacious and heavy punch. Then the raccoon will knock the tank to one side and start rummaging through the thin plastic bags where you put the food leftovers.
In household chemical stores today you can buy special tanks that exclude animal access (Animal Stopper Trash Can), as well as garbage bags that scare away animals with their smell (Rodent Repellent Trash Bags).

Tip three: close the doors for dogs and cats that lead outside (Dog & Cat Flaps) at night.
According to statistics, 79% of raccoons enter houses through these doors. Then they immediately go to the place where your pets eat.
After several such night visits, the raccoon will grow bolder and bring “relatives”. He will open the refrigerator and rip apart any food packages you store in the pantry.

Many homeowners do not realize for months that they are regularly visited by a raccoon. They blame their beloved cat or dog as the culprit.

By the way, strange behavior of a pet can be the result of contact with a raccoon. The wild animal often intimidates the “smaller brothers”, moreover, it eats up their entire diet.

Fourth tip: if you find a raccoon nest in the house, call the exterminator.
It will not be possible to cope alone, since it is almost impossible to catch both parents and cubs on their own. If one of the adults disappears, then revenge is guaranteed to you.
If the cub is left alone, he will crawl into the deepest gap and die. Then because of the vile cadaverous smell you will have to dismantle the whole house.

Remember that raccoons are most likely to breed in attics and in the spaces between walls. You will learn about the presence of animals by a specific night grinding.

Fifth tip: prepare “ammonium bombs”.
This is one of the most effective ways to smoke one or two adult raccoons from your nest. Take some tennis balls, moisten them with ammonia solution and throw them into the gap through which the animals crawl. This chemical smell is unbearable for them. The raccoons will leave the shelter after a maximum of 48 hours.

Sixth tip: Make a homemade pepper spray.
Pour half a liter of water into a saucepan, throw in a few chili, habanero or cayenne peppers, bring to a boil, then cool the liquid and pour into an aerosol can (like Windex).

Spray this spray all the places where the raccoon likes to be: a fence, a table, rugs, etc.

Seventh tip: treat the raccoon to his unloved dish.
Take a plate, place some food sprinkled with cayenne pepper on top of it, and then grab the attention of a nearby raccoon. Cut the distance between them in half and place the plate on the ground.
Step back and watch what is happening.
The beast will think that you want to treat him in a friendly way. He will go to the plate and inhale the pepper he does not like. After that, he will leave you for a long time and at the same time will not hold evil. “They are good people, but their food is not tasty,” the raccoon will probably think.

Eighth tip: raccoon urine and feces can contain dangerous bacteria (leptospirosis) and parasites (roundworm, lamblia).
Therefore, it is necessary to clean up after uninvited animals with special gloves and with the obligatory use of household chemicals.

Human infection is unlikely, but dogs and cats interested in the natural secretions of a raccoon can become infected instantly. As a result, the vet will charge you several hundred dollars for the treatment.
Finally, it should be said that killing raccoons is not encouraged by environmentalists.

Do not attempt to shoot, drown or poison the animal. On this score, different states have different laws, and many of them are lobbied by exterminator organizations who do not want to be left without work.
If you manage to catch a raccoon, then drive it at least 5 miles from your home, and then release it into the wild. He’s unlikely to come back.

Remember that in most cases, homemade pepper spray will help get rid of raccoons. Unlike factory-made pepper sprays, it can be used legally.
